A record number of UK consumers are choosing AltNets over mainstream providers, according to a recent study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The report, published by the Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), revealed that more than one million residential and commercial properties in the UK now connect to the internet via an AltNet. It means more people are using Alnets than ever before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
CityFibre accounts for the lion’s share of the connections. The provider is particularly popular in Northern cities, including Manchester, Leeds, and Sheffield. CityFibre also has networks in Glasgow, Norwich, Edinborough, and Portsmouth. And with dozens of projects in the pipeline, CityFibre is on the verge of shaking off its AltNet tag and becoming a genuine national broadband network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Community Fibre, London’s fastest AlNet Provider, now delivers gigabit-ready broadband to over 500,000 homes in and around the capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
WightFibre has established itself as the leading full-fibre provider on the Isle of Wight by bringing super-fast broadband to the island’s more isolated communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And in the North West, networks like 6Ginternet and HS4 continue expanding into the towns and villages ignored by big-name service providers like Sky and Virgin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Growth within the AltNet space shows no signs of slowing down. With billions of private and public capital pouring into AltNet providers, experts predict the sector will double in size over the next 12 months. And by 2025, as many as six million properties could have a live AltNet connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The rapid rise of the Altnets is welcome news to the UK government and consumers. AltNets are central to the government’s Project Gigabit, which aims to connect the majority of homes and businesses to high-speed full-fibre broadband by 2025. And a competitive telecoms industry with real alternatives equals more choice and lower monthly tariffs for UK customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Our report shows the increasing maturity of the [AltNet] sector,” said INCA Chairman Alex Blowers. “[AltNets] are undeniably a key partner in delivering a 21st century digital UK.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
